Why a reading specialist? |

| Some people, many of them adults, cannot read this article. |

| For them, the world seems to operate with a secret code. They haven't learned that code well enough to gain admittance to good colleges or decent-paying jobs. |

| Consider Tim, a sixteen-year-old high school junior. Because of his very high intelligence and compensatory talents, he coped quite ably in school until the end of junior high school. At that time, however, scholastic demands began to strain his skills (which he later learned were at only sixth-grade level) to the breaking point. He could no longer compensate; his once high grades became mediocre, then poor. Although Tim had worked with a tutor, the situation did not improve.
